LETHBRIDGE – Federal, Provincial and Territorial Ministers gathered at the Lethbridge Lodge to re-affirm their commitments to advancing health, sport and recreation.

They spent two days discussing safety, increasing infrastructure needs and moving the Framework for Recreation in Canada forward.

Federal Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities, Carla Qualtrough, specifically went over the government’s renewed plan to address concussions in combative sports.

“What we talked about was a shift in culture, in sport in particular, around acknowledging and addressing concussion in a very open, non-judgemental and matter of fact way.”

The areas surrounding concussion injuries which Minister Qualtrough hopes to bring to light are awareness, prevention, detection, management and supervision. That includes “return-to-learn” and “return-to-play” protocols by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Ministers also agreed to aligned pan-Canada safety standards, with the creation of a Committee of Canadian Athletic Sport Commission to oversee the communication and cooperation aspect.

Continuing work on a national physical activity framework was also a hot topic. It will be used to encourage Canadians to be more active, and engage them through all stages of life. Ministers will now approach stakeholders and other officials, to ensure coherence with existing sport, physical activity and recreation frameworks, policies and strategies.

That will also include making sport and recreation more inclusive, especially among women and indigenous youth.

Alberta’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Ricardo Miranda, noted that the province has always been a major voice of recreation development in Canada, and is proud to continue that status.

The next meeting between these ministers is scheduled to take place in July 2017, just before the Winnipeg 2017 Canada Summer Games.
