Another Rat – Found in Medicine Hat

Jun 17, 2016 | 1:55 PM

MEDICINE HAT:  Many people like to believe Alberta is rat free. However, Medicine Hat has a history of disproving that theory.

In 2012 a rat infestation out at the landfill led to the killing of around 150 rodents. Several were also found in April of 2014.

Now it seems there’s been another one found within City limits just the other day. The animal was found dead on Sprague Way, believed to have been run over by a vehicle.

Bylaw services said, after investigating, they don’t believe it was living in the area.

“Typically whenever there is a suspicion that there’s rat activity, we look around the area to see if there are any other indicators, like a food source or possible [burrowing], or anything like that. Given the fact this was found on the roadway there wasn’t any evidence of that. We do suspect that maybe this one caught a ride into town.” said Bylaw Officer Heather Trail.

The City says since the last incident in 2014, they haven’t seen any evidence of rat activity at the landfill.

If you do find a rat, the City says you should report it.
