LETHBRIDGE – After nearly five years of construction, the newest wing of Chinook Regional Hospital is almost fully up and running.

Officials from the Government of Alberta, Alberta Health Services and the City of Lethbridge came together to celebrate the grand opening of the $135-million, five-storey expansion.

Several departments, including day surgery, cardio-respiratory, outpatient and neonatal, will share in 19,000 square metres. A new ceremonial room was also added on the fifth floor, to be available for people of various faiths.

The emergency department received $9-million in updates, as well. This is the first time it’s been renovated since 1988. It now features 30-per cent more floor space and seven new treatment spaces, with a new entry created on the north side of the building.

The remaining portion of the labour and delivery unit is set to open this November.

Teri Myhre, Acute Care West Senior Operating Officer in the South Zone, says this will be a huge advantage to the entire region.

“For many people, they’ll be able to get their services here in Lethbridge, and they don’t need to travel to Calgary. But it also means we have capacity for future growth. Looking 10 years down the road, we know that we have the ability to provide service to our community.”

The expansion also means more job opportunities to keep the new wing running. Sarah Hoffman, Alberta’s Health Minister, says 85 full-time equivalence positions will open for health care and support services staff.
