Construction Complete – Henderson Pool to Open July 15th

LETHBRIDGE:  Challenges during the final stage of construction delayed the re-opening of Henderson Pool about two weeks. However, on Wednesday, the City Parks and Recreation Department confirmed the pool will open to the public on Friday, July 15th.

According to the city, “The specialized liner in the new zero-depth entry pool requires welding at the seams, a process that is extremely moisture sensitive and has taken longer than anticipated because of rain showers. In addition, work on the liner had to be suspended at times because high temperatures made it unsafe for workers to be in the pool basin. Crews worked 12-hour shifts, seven days a week to get Henderson Pool open as soon as possible.”

Ahsley Matthews, Project Coordinator, says mechanical systems should be running and tested by next week. When construction is fully complete, testing will be done on electrical systems, pumps and filtration systems, to ensure the pool is safe for swimmers. All systems are required to run over a number of days, and inspectors from Alberta Health Services will have the final say.

The public may see people in the pool over the next few days but, these are staff members undergoing training, to understand both mechanical and programming aspects. 

“It’s exciting, at the same time it’s frustrating because we had anticipated that it was going to be open right about this time. We know the community has been very patient, and we appreciate how patient they have been,” noted Matthews.

The project was right on budget at $10.3-million. Upgrades will feature waterslides, a climbing wall, drop slide, one-metre diving board, spray park and a concession stand. Accessibility has also been greatly improved by offering a zero-depth entry pool, as well as accessible change rooms.

Henderson Pool will be able to accomodate up to 1250 people on the grounds, with between 15 and 17 lifeguards on-duty. Private space rentals will also be made available to host parties.

Once operational, the facility will be open to the public seven days a week from noon – 8 p.m. Fees to the new water park will be consistent with fees at all other City owned pools.

Matthews added that this is a very unique water park south of Calgary, and many communities have already expressed interest in coming to Lethbridge to check it out. 

While the pool will open to the public on July 15th, the grand opening will take place on July 28th with a ribbon cutting.

The City of Lethbridge is inviting the public to enter to win a free swim at the newly developed pool.   Those interested can enter by visiting the citypool website  until July 13th.

Winners will be notified on July 14th and 15th and will be able to pick up their free passes at Nicholas Sheran, Stan Siwik or Fritz Sick Pools for one week beginning July 16th. Any passes not picked up after July 22nd will be redrawn.
