The 4th annual One Cylinder Tractor Rally Takes Place in Lethbridge

Jun 24, 2016 | 12:37 PM

LETHBRIDGE:  Broxburn owner Paul deJonge is behind the rally and describes the unique machines as the ‘Harley Davidson’ of tractors.  A parade is held in the city from 6:00 to 9:00-pm on Friday evening. Then demonstration events with the tractors take place at Broxburn on Saturday.

“We demonstrate the tractors, and they all have a very unique way of starting – most of them are hand started – we warm them up with a torch or some of them can be started with shotgun shells, cause these are very odd and unique tractors.  And then, we have a pull sled that we demonstrate the power of these tractors and the people can participate by stepping on the sled to make the tractor slow down.

As for how the event was developed, de Jonge says it was on a trip to England, where a fellow he met invited him to participate in a tractor rally.

“All these farmers and non-farmers came out with their tractors and cruised around through the countryside, which is gorgeous.  It’s very common in England to do this, so, when I cam back I thought it would be cool to do that here.”

There is one difference which de Jonge explains with a chuckle.

“The tractors don’t drive that fast and to drive through the countryside here is not near as gorgeous as it is in England and it becomes a bit more monotonous because of the flat prairie. So I thought, let’s drive into the city and it’s very beautiful when we go down Parkside Drive underneath the big trees.”

The tractor parade starts at 6:00 along 43rd street.  It travels west on south Parkside drive, then past the hospital and up to the City Hall parking lot, where they stop for the curious to take a look. From there, the machines will head north to 9th avenue and then east to 43rd again and out of the city to Broxburn.

The tractor pull events at the Broxburn Vegetable farm on the jail road, run from 11:00-am  to 3:00-pm on Saturday.
