Flag Raising Marks Beginning of the 47th Annual Summer Games

Jul 4, 2016 | 11:55 AM

LETHBRIDGE – Nearly 2,500 athletes will be in Lethbridge starting Wednesday, July 6, for the 2016 Southern Alberta Summer Games.

A flag raising Monday morning at City Hall marked the official start of the 47th annual competition, that runs until July 9 at venues across the city. The flag will fly all week to celebrate the spirit of the games.

This is the second time the games have been hosted in the city. The first time was back in 2006.

Six hundred of those participating are from Lethbridge. The rest will be coming from 13 surrounding regions, stretching from Medicine Hat to the Crowsnest Pass.

Games Coordinator, Eric Sharp, says it’s a great way to showcase all sorts of local talent. “It’s really built as a grassroots sports festival. So, it’s geared towards all ages and all abilities… There’s lots of different sports, and then some not considered sports usually, like cribbage and photography. It’s a wide offering.”

All community members are invited to take part in the official opening ceremonies at 7-pm on July 6 in Galt Gardens.

Events start that same day, and schedules can be found at www.southernalbertasummergames.com.
