Peak Storm Season Just Beginning According to Environment Canada

ALBERTA – Coming off a long weekend in which we saw large hail and even four tornados – two confirmed and two probable – around Alberta, Environment Canada is saying that was just the beginning.

“The peak of severe summer weather throughout Alberta is the month of July,” explained Meteorologist Kirk Torneby. “If you look at the statistics back over a number of years, on average one of every three days is a summer severe weather day, a thunderstorm of some type, severe in nature, either heavy rain, hail or tornado.”

Having said that, Torneby noted that the weather has been average for our region so far, and that it only seems higher than normal because of the volume of weather events across the province over the weekend.

Torneby continued by saying being prepared is the key to dealing with the weather, “It is during the peak season obviously important to pay attention to the local conditions. Know what your susceptibilities are in the community you live in, know if they’re susceptible to hail or other things, as well as keeping an eye on the sky, looking at the forecast.”

While Torneby acknowledged tornados as being the number one concern for most people, he pointed out that lightning should get more of your attention. He stated that Alberta usually has about 15 tornados a year, compared to roughly 300,000 lightning strikes.
