LPS Highlight the Importance of Helmets for Kids on Bicycles

LETHBRIDGE: Lethbridge Police are asking parents to ensure their children have the proper safety equipment when they head out on their bicycles.

LPS Executive Officer Kristen Harding stated that every summer they see a large number of kids riding their bikes without helmets, and this year is no different.

“It’s been proven time and time again that helmets reduce the risk and severity of head injuries, but they don’t do any good if they’re simply not being worn,” explained Harding.

She did note that there is a fine of $93 for anyone under the age of 18 riding a bike without a helmet.

“This really isn’t about fines or tickets, our primary concern is safety,” Harding continued. “We want everyone’s kids to be safe this summer, so we’re asking parents to please go out and get their kids helmets if they don’t already have them, and then make sure they wear them.

“We encourage all parents to lead by example, wear your bike helmet, even thought it’s not the law, it’s not mandatory for you, but by wearing your helmet you’re showing your kids that it’s the smart thing to do.”
