No-Dogs-Allowed Areas Versus Dog Friendly Parks

Jul 29, 2016 | 10:16 AM

LETHBRIDGE – Your dog depends on you for his or her’s well-being, but it won’t pay the $100 fine if you are caught strolling through a no-dogs-allowed area in the city.

Skylar Plourde, Animal Control Officer with Lethbridge Animal Services said that under the current Dog Control By-Law and City Parks By-Law there are areas within the city which are referred to as restricted areas for dogs.

“We have these [by-laws] in place for public safety, cleanliness and respect. Restricted areas include: city cemeteries, school properties and wildlife reserves such as The Helen Schuler Nature Centre, Alexander Wilderness Park, Cottonwood Park and the The Elizabeth Hall Wetlands.”

Similar to having by-laws in place in wildlife reserves to protect wild animals, the by-law also requires dog walkers to stay 30 meters away from playground equipment to keep children safe.

Anyone found in care and control of an un-leashed dog in a restricted area faces another $100 fine.

Plourde said that all restricted areas are clearly marked and that the city encourages dog owners to use the three off-leash dog parks within the city.
