Building That Contributed to Commercial Boom Up for Historic Resource Designation

LETHBRIDGE – Another building could soon be added to Lethbridge’s ever-growing list of municipal historic resources.

On July 25, Council agreed to the first steps of designating the Burns Block in the downtown core, which is now home to the Chinese Food Restaurant, Shanghai Chop Suey.

“It actually goes back to a time when the City of Lethbridge was booming and commercial was the new thing coming in,” explained Councillor Bridget Mearns. “It was built in 1911 and it was a meat butcher shop until 1940. It’s been a number of things since then. One that’s really interesting is it was a Remington Typewriter Company. It’s interesting to see how businesses evolve in our city.”

It has now moved into a 60 day waiting period so the owner can voice any concerns, but Councillor Mearns noted that they expect full participation. A bylaw will then be passed to officially designate it.

As part of the designation, a number of elements (pictured above) must be maintained to a certain level to protect the building’s historic significance. More funding will also be available to the owner of the Burns Block to help with those maintenance costs.

At the most recent count, Lethbridge is home to one federal heritage building, as well as 13 provincial and 16 municipal historic resources.
