PRIME MINISTER IN NOVA SCOTIA, P.E.I. TODAY

The Prime Minister continues his swing through Atlantic Provinces today, with stops in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Justin Trudeau begins his day in Bridgetown, N.S., where he is expected to make an announcement with the province’s premier. Trudeau is then set to attend a community event in New Glasgow, N.S. before heading on to Prince Edward Island where he is to meet with the premier in Charlottetown.

BAIN TRIAL DELIBERATIONS CONTINUE

Jurors at Richard Henry Bain’s first-degree murder trial are entering their fourth day of deliberations today. Bain, 65, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of stagehand Denis Blanchette, as well as three counts of attempted murder. The charges are connected with events outside the Metropolis nightclub in September 2012 as then-premier designate Pauline Marois was inside celebrating the Parti Quebecois’ election win. Bain’s lawyer has argued he was mentally ill at the time and should be found not criminally responsible.

GOVERNMENT TO APOLOGIZE FOR FORCED RELOCATION IN MANITOBA

The federal government is to formally apologize and provide compensation today for the forced relocation of a First Nations community in northern Manitoba 60 years ago. Indigenous and Northern Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett is to fulfil an agreement reached three years ago with the Sayisi Dene over a forced move that led to death, hunger and violence. The Sayisi Dene were relocated partly because the Manitoba government believed they were causing a steep decline in the caribou herd — an idea later proven untrue.

CANADA’S MEDAL STREAK HALTED AT DAY 9

Pole vaulter Shawn Barber’s early exit ended Canada’s streak of winning at least one medal a day at nine. Canada remained in 11th place in the overall standings with 13 medals (two gold, two silver, nine bronze). The goal coming into the Games was a top 12 finish. Canada will have more shots for a medal today in the men’s high jump and synchronized swimming women’s duet.
