Canada Post and Union to Sit Down with a Mediator

Aug 26, 2016 | 7:26 AM

OTTAWA – Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers will begin working with a special mediator this morning in the face of a union threat of job action.

Speaking in Saguenay, Quebec last night, Labour Minister MaryAnn Mihychuk (mih-HY’-chuk) said she was hoping for a “significant resolution” by Sunday.

The union, which represents nearly 51-thousand Canada Post employees, issued a 72-hour notice of job action yesterday and accused the Crown corporation of trying to force a labour dispute.

The union has not specified whether the job action would result in a disruption of mail and parcel deliveries.

If that does happen, it could come as early as next week.

CUP-W says the notice served to manager contained a list of anticipated job actions — but stopped short of a full-blown walkout.

The notice puts postal carriers in a legal strike position by August 28th.
