PotashCorp, Agrium in preliminary merger talks to create agricultural giant
CALGARY — Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan and Agrium, already global powerhouses in the agricultural sector, said Tuesday they are in merger talks in what could create an industry giant worth well over $30 billion.
Both companies issued virtually identical statements confirming the preliminary negotiations after their shares were halted on the Toronto Stock Exchange. They said no agreement has been reached and there is no assurance any transaction will come from their discussions.
Headquartered in Saskatoon, PotashCorp is the world’s largest fertilizer company by capacity, while Calgary-based Agrium operates the largest global direct-to-farmer agricultural retail operation.
“It would create a blockbuster agriculture company in Canada, and kind of a global blockbuster company as well,” said John Stephenson, president of Stephenson & Co. Capital Management.
