LETHBRIDGE –  New home starts continue on a downward trend across the province – including in Lethbridge.

After holding steady for the first few months of the year, new home starts in the city have now dropped for the fourth month in a row.

For the month of August, there were a combined 62 single and multi homes starts, compared to 90 during the same month last year. The decline was spread evenly across both multi and single family cosntruction.

Year-to-date numbers also show a decline. During the first eight months of the year, there were 417 new home starts, while the number reached 605 during the same time last year.

The new home construction picture across the province paints a similar picture, with the exception of Grande Prairie, which has seen a modest 20-unit increase so far this year.

The construction scene in Calgary and Edmonton has been on a fairly consistent plunge. Year-to-date housing starts in Calgary are down about 35-per cent, while Edmonton new home construction is down about 50-per cent.
