“Grow-Op” Agricultural Opportunity for Milk River

MILK RIVER –  The sleepy town of Milk River could eventually be home to a new economic opportunity, thanks to a proposed medical marijuana grow operation.

On Monday, (Sept. 12) approximately 80 Milk River residents attended a town hall meeting regarding a proposed land re-designation bylaw that could result in the sale of six acres of land in the town’s north end, next to the water reservoir.

Questions and concerns were brought forth and comments made at the town hall were discussed in a Council meeting immediately following.

David Hawco, Mayor of Milk River, said that while there were some residents opposed to the proposed operation within town-limits, the vast majority voiced their optimism on the project’s potential business opportunities.

“The By-law amendment passed on Monday and now The Green Living Agriculture, a privately owned company, based out of Okotoks, must seek federal government approach for the grow operation before purchasing the plot,” Hawco said.

Hawco explained that the next steps will see the company presenting an operative proposal for that land for town lawyers to look over and the company acquiring the okay from the federal government to grow medical marijuana on the property.

“If and when we do accept the proposal, then a developmental-permit must be applied for to build the building itself. This is the company’s first venture into medical marijuana grow operation.”

Hawco said that this process will take some time and that the town is not anticipating any construction on the project for quite some time.
