TRUDEAU TO ADDRESS UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will address the UN General Assembly today. He told a UN conference on Monday that it’s not enough to applaud what Canada has done to help Syrian refugees because there’s much more left to do. Trudeau also announced that Canada would spend an additional $64.5 million over the next several years to support people affected by humanitarian crises around the world.

BAIL HEARING TODAY FOR QUEBEC TEENS IN ALLEGED MURDER PLOT 

Two Quebec teens facing multiple charges in an alleged murder conspiracy plot against three of their peers are scheduled to attend a bail hearing today. The two boys, who are 14 and 16, were arrested last Wednesday and arraigned Thursday. Provincial police said a search at a high school in St-Hyacinthe yielded evidence the youths were allegedly on the verge of carrying out the plot.

REGINA MAN WHO KILLED 2 ABORIGINAL WOMEN TO BE SENTENCED TODAY

A Regina man will be sentenced today after pleading guilty to the second-degree murder of two aboriginal women who disappeared three years ago. Clayton Eichler’s trial was to begin Monday on charges of first-degree murder in the deaths of Kelly Goforth and Richele Bear, but he instead entered the guilty plea. Victim impact statements are scheduled to be heard before sentencing.

DE BEERS OPENS GAHCHO KUE DIAMOND MINE

Canada’s position as a big player in the global diamond industry will be further crystallized today when it formally opens Gahcho Kue, estimated to be one of the 10 biggest diamond mines in the world. The site — about 280 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife — will be the sixth diamond mine opened in Canada in the 18 years that the country has mined the precious stone.
