Waterton – Waterton Lakes National Park celebrated the completion of two major projects on Saturday (Sep. 30).

Red Rock Canyon Parkway was resurfaced and more parking was added at the end near the Canyon over this summer. It came in under budget at $5-million.

The $8-million resurfacing, guard rail replacement and ditching project along Highway 5/6, which runs down to the US border, was also finished.

Families were invited to bring their bikes along for the sixth annual Ride the Red Rock event and travel the 30-kilometer loop to experience the combined $13-million in upgrades.

“A lot of assets, including the roads, are coming to the end of their expected, useful life. So, it’s just an ideal opportunity to capitalize on those assets,” explained Scott Steveson, Project Manager. “Also, we were able to take advantage of the lower oil prices, in particular with the price of asphalt being lower.”

Areas where large volumes of top soil were disturbed during construction have also been re-seeded to promote the long-term growth of native grass communities.

Parks Canada is investing $3-billion as part of one of the largest federal infrastructure plans in the organization’s history. Waterton has received $107-million of that to support its infrastructure needs.

Stevenson says crews are currently working on replacing the Cameron Lake Day Use area facilities. Next fall, the Akamina Parkway will undergo similar resurfacing work to Red Rock Canyon and Highway 5/6.
