Family Member of Attack Victim Praying for Positive Outcome

Oct 6, 2016 | 4:35 PM

LETHBRIDGE – It was a heavy and subdued atmosphere as media spoke with a family member of the victim of last Friday’s brutal attack on the south-side.

Reporters who normally jostle for a good spot around a speaker were quiet and respectful as they gathered around the father-in-law of the victim. He was nervous and began slowly but, gathered courage as he spoke of the situation and how the family was holding up.

The father-in-law noted that in spite of the brutality of the crime, members of the family are trying to focus on the positive and not the negative, even though they don’t know what the outcome will be.

He calls it a tragic story that will change many lives forever, particularly the lives of his son and daughter-in-law, who had only been married two months when the incident happened.

Police say the 25-year-old victim was struck with a weapon, dragged into the alley off 6th Avenue South, and sexually assaulted while she walked to work last Friday (Sept. 30) morning. They indicate the victim did not know the accused and that it was a random attack.

The victim remains in critical condition in a Calgary hospital.

“We trust that the medical professionals are the best in the world – believe me this is hard on them  – they walk in, doctors who have been doing this for years, and they break down in tears because they said it was the worst case they’ve ever seen.”

While hoping and praying for the best, the father-in-law did not shy away from reality.

“We’ve had conversations with doctors, to prepare us for the worst and the truth is, they can’t even tell us how it’s going to turn out – that’s why we’re taking this position. To sit and think the worst is negative and it won’t help her, so we are believing she will recover, we are praying she will recover, we are trusting in Jesus that she will recover.”

The father-in-law expressed gratitude for the grace and mercy shown by the police and asks for the communities continued prayers.

The point he wanted to underscore to the community was that people not resort to anger over the situation, as it will not help the family.

Denzel Dre Colton Bird of Lethbridge was arrested without incident Wednesday, Oct. 5 and remains in custody, pending a Judicial Interim Release hearing. He’s charged with attempted murder, aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, and break and enter.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to the charge of sexual assault, the media can no longer idenify the victim and LethbridgeNewsNow.com will not identify the family member.
