Establishing Trade Relations Between Lethbridge And Yuma, AZ

LETHBRIDGE – Lethbridge is looking to its southern neighbours for trade opportunities this week.

On Tuesday (Oct. 25), Economic Development Lethbridge (EDL) kicked off a two-day trade mission welcoming government officials from Yuma, Arizona in hopes of exploring opportunities for future collaboration.

The visit highlights Lethbridge-based expertise in areas such as post-secondary education, industrial business park development, downtown revitalization, economic development, entrepreneur development and more.

Douglas Nicholls, Mayor of the City of Yuma, highlighted the natural connection between the two cities, saying the visit only made sense to lay down the foundation for industry development that is compatible to both parties.

“We are on the same CANAMEX corridor which is important when we talk about global trade. Gross National Product is looking to increase over the next 20 years and that means that that Canmex border will be more important.”

Mayor Nicholls noted that the visit to Lethbridge College and U of L made it apparent to him that Yuma could benefit from lessons learned from post-secondary expansions and innovations in Lethbridge.

“We have a great College, but the University experience here is something we are looking to emulate in Yuma. It’s not so much looking at similarities but sharing experiences so we can learn from each other.”

In addition to the key areas of focus already mentioned, Yuma poses a strong similarity to Lethbridge with their agricultural pursuits and innovative innovation.
