Nutritionist says changes in guidelines are due

A local nutritionist says Canada’s Food Guide was overdue for an update.

Health Canada has begun the consultation process on updating things like dietary recommendations and food labelling. Heather Mathur, population public health dietician with Alberta Health Services, says people need better advice.

“They’re still not getting enough vegetables and fruits. Sugar intake is still high. Saturated fat intake is still high,” she said. “So I think messages to consumers need to be reevaluated, and hopefully the messages can come across with this revision to help people understand how to pick healthier foods.”

Mathur feels many people are still confused by the product info on packages, and clear information on the front would be helpful.

“I think consumers have a difficult time reading the nutrition facts table and knowing what is their healthier choice,” she said. “So I think that’s part of the initiative, is to try to make it easier for consumers to know, this product’s higher in sugar, or this product’s higher in sodium, just to kind of guide them to make those healthier choices.”

As part of the consultation Health Canada has an online questionnaire.
