Province to promote energy efficiency with incentives

Oct 27, 2016 | 12:15 PM

ALBERTA – The province hopes some incentives will encourage more Albertans to use energy-efficient technology.

The newly-created Energy Efficiency Alberta agency will launch its first three programs early in 2017. A Request for Proposals will be issued to chose third-party providers to support the agency.

“Putting a price on carbon pollution allows us to deliver efficiency programs that will help Albertans save energy and save money as we diversify our economy and create good jobs,” Environment minister Shannon Phillips said in a news release.

The Direct Install Residential Program will make free installation available for low-cost lighting, water, and heating units in homes. The Residential Consumer Products Program will make rebates available at the checkout when buying lighting, insulation, and appliances. And the Business, Non-Profit, and Institutional Rebate program will promote high-efficiency product usage and installation.

David Dodge of Green Energy Futures was named chair of the agency, and a board of directors was also formally appointed.

The government says Alberta is the last North American jurisdiction without energy-efficient programs.
