Los Amigos Receive Vehicles For Seventh Donation

LETHBRIDGE – For the seventh year in a row, the Rotary Club of Lethbridge Sunrise is teaming up with the City to deliver much needed emergency and transit vehicles to communities in Mexico.

On October 17, Council agreed to provide two decommissioned ambulances and four handi-buses, at a total value of $12,550.

Karl Samuels, project coordinator, says the Los Amigos are currently working with Rotary groups in the states of Sinaloa, Jalisco and Nayarit to assess community needs. The two groups will then decide where the vehicles should be distributed.

According to Jim Campbell, project adviser, each vehicle is inspected to make sure it’s in good working order, then communities must go through a rigorous application process to ensure they can handle the operation and maintenance.

A total of 29 vehicles have been donated by the Los Amigos over the past six years. Campbell noted that all of them are still in use today.

He says the donations provide a sense of safety and unity in places that wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford such vehicles, giving an example of one community in particular.

“They took us to their fire station, and they had flat nose shovel, pick axe, a canvas cot and then they had a cube van for their fire/ambulance vehicle. They were receiving an ambulance that year. So, that was making major changes in their community.”

This past April, a team of 25 delivered two firetrucks, two ambulances and four handibuses to Mazatlan.

The group is planning to make its next trip in either October or November 2017.
