Family Fest out, classic rock in for New Year’s Eve

LETHBRIDGE – After 20 years, a revamp is coming for New Year’s Eve celebrations at Exhibition Park in Lethbridge. But it was a decision that wasn’t without some angst.

In place of the annual Family Fest, classic Canadian rock band Trooper will headline Rockfest Dec. 31 at the North Pavilion. The festival will also include a late lunch, a New Year’s countdown, and opening act Fast Times.

“Our audiences have been going down. People change. Families stay maybe at home more on New Year’s Eve, depending on what day it is,” marketing manager Doug Kryzanowski said. “The flip side of that was, this is a Saturday night party.”

He said there had come to be too much familiarity between Family Fest and the newer Children’s Family Festival. So the two events will be amalgamated into one festival next May 6. Kryzanowski said there will be more details to come on that event, which has the potential to be bigger than in past years.

It paves the way for a more adult New Year’s Eve event, which will also mark the start of the exhibition’s 120th anniversary year, Canada’s 150th birthday, and the centennial of Alberta 4H.

“People were just tired of going to bars on New Year’s Eve,” Kryzanowski said, adding that Trooper, known for hits like “We’re Here for a Good Time (Not a Long Time),” “Raise a Little Hell,” and “The Boys in the Bright White Sports Car,” is a good get for the event.

“We think we can grow this into a very strong New Year’s Eve party.”

Tickets for Rockfest are being sold in advance only, at a price of $69, at Gas King locations in Lethbridge and Picture Butte.
