Canada making tangible contributions to Middle East peace: Governor General
OTTAWA — Canada’s Governor General says this country is making small but important contributions to ending the historic conflict between Israelis and Palestinians — even as some fear the prospects for peace are dimming.
David Johnston wrapped up an eight-day, three-country tour of the Middle East on Saturday in which he affirmed Canada’s support for a negotiated Middle East peace — preferably with the creation of an independent Palestine alongside Israel.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asked Johnston to visit the region. Johnston is the first Canadian Governor General to make state visits to Jordan and Israel.
The tour, which also included a stop in the West Bank, is expected to feed into the Liberal government’s effort to recalibrate Canada’s Middle East policy.
