Union applies for strike vote at Edith Cavell Care Centre
LETHBRIDGE – The union representing employees of a Lethbridge care home says they don’t want to strike, but need to get bargaining going again.
The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) has applied to the Alberta Labour Relations Board for workers to hold a strike vote at the Edith Cavell Care Centre. The union says employees have been without a contract for almost a year, and adds management rejected a mediator’s recommendations after workers voted in favour of them.
If the labour relations board approves a strike vote, and it passes, AUPE would have a 120-day window to begin a strike, which would require 72 hours notice.
The care home is privately owned by Chantelle Management of Langley, B.C., but is funded by Alberta Health Services.
