22nd anniversary for Operation Red Nose in 2016

Nov 12, 2016 | 8:04 AM

LETHBRIDGE – As the holiday season quickly approaches, Pronghorn Athletics will be stepping up to help reduce the number of drinking and driving incidents with their annual “Operation Red Nose” campaign.

Starting Friday night (Nov. 25), those who feel like they have had a little too much can phone and be driven home in their own vehicle by a team of Red Nose volunteers.

The service is by donation and funds raised will go directly towards the University of Lethbridge Pronghorn Athletics.

Eoin Colquhoun, Pronghorn’s communications manager, says that in 21 years, Operation Red Nose has provided 993 rides with help from more than 550 volunteers. It’s also raised more than $646,000 for U of L sports teams.

Colquhoun says the record for number of rides in one campaign was set in 2011, when 1,428 rides were provided, noting that those numbers could not have been reached without a dedicated volunteer base.

“Typically 60-per cent of our volunteers are our athletes but that still leaves a big chunk. Last year we used 550 volunteers, typically we’re over 600 per year. We can’t operate without volunteers and the sponsors that we have.”

Teams of Red Nose escort drivers take volunteers to pick up clients. The designated driver and a navigator then drive the clients’ vehicle, with the client in it, back home.

More volunteers are always needed, especially on New Year’s Eve. Anyone interested in volunteering is encouraged to go to: http://gohorns.ca to download the volunteer application form.

Sponsors, both financial and of products and services, are key to enabling the program to be offered at no cost.

Along with cash donations, all food and refreshments for volunteers, gas, phone service, and insurance coverage is donated.
