Man arrested in connection with Medicine Hat homicide

Nov 14, 2016 | 4:11 AM

MEDICINE HAT – Major Crimes is investigating the second homicide in just over a week, and the city’s third homicide this year.

The suspect was originally reported missing Saturday, Nov. 12, but police say he was located around 10 p.m. that night in the area of Prince Street and Maple Avenue SE. From there, an investigation led them to a residence in the Flats.

“Based upon information received and other evidence, police [then] attended to a residence in the 800 block of 3rd Street SE where the body of a deceased female was located,” Insp. Brent Secondiak said at a media conference Sunday morning.

The deceased female has yet to be positively identified and an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 15 to determine the cause of death. A 26-year-old man is now in custody and will be charged in relation to the murder.

The investigation is still ongoing. It is unclear if the deceased woman was a resident in that home, but police have confirmed that the woman’s death is not related to last week’s homicide.

Members of Southeast Alberta Search and Rescue (SEASAR) were seen in the Flats and around downtown Saturday morning and Secondiak confirmed it was in relation to the investigation.

“With any file, any homicide we typically do area searches to see if there’s anything we’re not aware of,” he says. “Just evidence related to the offence.”

Neighbours in the area say they were surprised to find out what happened. Many said while there has been a police presence on the street before, for the most part it’s a quiet area. One man said the residents were generally quiet and he never noticed other people going in and out of the house.

“We really like the neighbourhood,” said another neighbour. “We have kids here and we’ve never had an issue with any of our neighbours.”

“It’s a community, you wave to your neighbour, you say how’s it going,” said a man who lived down the street. “You kind of look out, if anyone is walking through your neighbour’s yard, you say hey what’s up.”

Another man who lives in the area was out for a walk Saturday morning says the homicide is alarming.

“I’m kind of worried about the neighbours, always. You’re worried about the people that live there of course and you never want anything like this to happen in your neighbourhood, but it happened a week ago in Crescent Heights,” he said, adding that it could happen anywhere.

Most residents who spoke to CHAT News said they didn’t know the residents of the the two homes taped off, but one woman said there where sometimes loud parties. Another man said he would occasionally hear yelling from inside the house.

“There’s fights every so often,” he said. “Louder voices, but nothing we’ve seen outside. Nothing to be super concerned about.”

He adds he was surprised to hear about what happened, but says it doesn’t change his perspective of the area.

“We feel sorry for the family,” he said.
