Alpine World Cup skiing event in Alberta Rockies cancelled over warm weather

Nov 16, 2016 | 8:00 PM

LAKE LOUISE, Alta. — Warm weather has wiped out next week’s scheduled men’s World Cup alpine skiing event in Lake Louise, Alta., for the first time in 29 years.

Despite using snow guns and installing safety systems on the course in the Rocky Mountains, organizers say they can’t ensure safety in time for the event.

Race chairman Brian Lyman says the upper part of the mountain is in excellent condition.

He says it’s the lower half of the mountain that’s affected by the warmer temperatures.

Lyman says they’re working to build the race track for the women’s event, scheduled for Dec. 2-4.

With open weekends throughout the World Cup schedule, Lyman says the men’s race will likely be made up somewhere in Europe.
