Hurricanes outworked in 4-1 loss to Ice

LETHBRIDGE – Despite coming into the game ranked dead last in the WHL, the Kootenay Ice looked like the better team for a majority of a 4-1 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes Wednesday night (Nov. 16).

The Hurricanes came out flat, giving up 14 shots in the opening frame and needing goaltender Stuart Skinner to stand strong to keep things scoreless.

Kootenay’s Zak Zborosky picked the game’s first goal at the 16:37 mark of the second period, before going on to score the eventual game winner 4:12 into the third.

The Hurricanes did show some life on a couple of second period power-plays, but weren’t able to sustain pressure in Kootenay’s end until late in the third.

Down 2-0 with just over two minutes left to play, the Canes would give up an empty net goal, score one of their own 12 seconds later from Tanner Nagel, then give up another empty netter 1:22 after that.

Despite their struggles, the Hurricanes did manage to outshoot Kootenay 41-33, however, Ice netminder Jakob Walter turned in a solid performance to pick up the win.

“We got outworked for most of the game,” said Hurricanes head Coach, Brent Kisio, following the loss. “I think at the end we showed some desperation, but it was too late. Our work ethic was a big issue tonight.”

When asked what needs to change for the club – which has now lost four in a row – Kisio was quick to reply.

“We got to get around the net a little more, we had some chances, we had some good looks – give credit to their goalie, he played a great game – but if we had worked a little harder, we would have earned some of those bounces tonight.”

During the Cane’s four game losing skid they have given up 19 goals while only scoring nine themselves. The streak is also part of a bigger slide that has seen them win just two of their last 10 games and plummet down the standings to 19th overall with a record of 7-10-1-2.

Unfortunately for the team, things won’t be getting any easier, as they play three road games this weekend, beginning in Seattle against the Thunderbirds on Friday (Nov. 18.). So far this season the Hurricanes are 2-5-0-2 as the visitors, compared to a 5-5-1-0 record as the host.

They will play their next home game November 25 against the Swift Current Broncos.
