Voices of children included in city planning

LETHBRIDGE – Kids are being included in planning for Lethbridge’s growth as a city to 100,000 people.

As part of a 100K+ Conversations event at Lakeview School, Ms. Tadey’s grade four class prepared proposals for new developments like sports fields and hotels.

“We’re planning for the next 10, 20, 30 years of the city,” community planner Perry Stein said, “so that’s the city these kids are going to inherit. So getting them to think about the places they want to live, the communities they want to live in, the jobs they want to have, the parks they want to play in right now helps us to put those pieces in place for when they are 20 and 30 years older.”

Paige Zemp, one of the students, appreciated that their ideas for change were being listened to.

“I would like to see more national parks and nature parks in the world, and have less stuff,” she said. Melora Bowie, a budding author, suggested a writing centre, while Kylie Marshall called for a book centre and other family activities.

“They’re very enthusiastic, and they love thinking about the future and brainstorming and coming up with really cool ideas. They love participating,” Stein said.

The 100K+ initiative will continue into 2018, gathering input for an updated master plan for Lethbridge.
