LETHBRIDGE –   A collision on Highway-3 Monday afternoon sent three people to hospital and claimed the life of a Coaldale man.

The incident happened just before 5:30 at the Highway-3 intersection with range road 212, near Green Haven Garden Centre.

RCMP Staff Sergeant Glenn Henry confirmed that four vehicles were involved in two separate incidents.

Henry stated a silver Ford Focus was south-bound on the range road and attempted to cross Highway-3 when it was struck by a west bound half ton truck. The force of the collision pushed the car into the south side ditch.

There was then a secondary collision in which two other vehicles were rear-ended when they came up to the initial collision.

Three people were taken to hospital, where the 32-year old male driver of the Ford, a resident of Coaldale, succumbed to his injuries.  No name has been released.

The other two people taken to hospital were treated for minor injuries.

Staff Sergeant Henry noted that a traffic reconstruction specialist had been called in to look at the scene.  He said the east bound lanes of highway-3 were expected to be closed at 43rd street for several hours, requiring traffic to be diverted down the jail road.  Traffic heading west near the collision scene was down to one lane.
