Power usage surges during cold spell

Electricity demand soared to unprecedented heights in Alberta on Monday thanks to the start of the cold snap in the region.
The Alberta Electric System Operator says despite the surge in demand there were never concerns about supply.
Forecasters expect the extreme cold conditions to continue throughout the week.
The system operator says people can cut their electricity consumption by reducing their use of appliances, running appliances during off-peak hours and turning off unnecessary lights. (Global Edmonton)
