LETHBRIDGE – The Community Foundation recognized local individuals in southwestern Alberta who contributed to enriching the area, by awarding $200,000 in grants to 27 organizations.

From playgrounds and pools to program development and historical preservation, the grants will be put towards a variety of projects.

As part of the Community Foundation’s Vital Signs work, on Dec. 8th, a Vital Community Grant of $25,000 was awarded to the Southern Alberta Ethnic Association (SAEA) for the purchase of much-needed facility equipment.

Representing over 32 ethno-cultural groups and independent members, the SAEA serves over 3,000 local individuals working to support new Canadians through programming, collaboration, and advocacy.

SAEA moved into a new facility in May 2016, however, there were not enough funds to acquire all of the needed amenities such as furniture.

With the additional funds, those needs and more can now be realized, such as an improved sound system and a stage for the Multicultural Centre.

David Humphrey, Managing Director for SAEA noted that by providing a professional experience for those renting the facility there is more likelihood of repeat and increased business. “It is through facility rentals, grants, and partnering with sponsors that SAEA generates the funds necessary for our programs, celebrating cultural diversity, and working to eradicate racism in southern Alberta,” he said.

Communities receiving grants include: Barnwell, Champion, Coalhurst, County of Lethbridge, Crowsnest Pass, Lethbridge, Lomond, Magrath, Nobleford, Raymond, Standoff, Taber, and Vulcan.
