Hurricanes down Kelowna 6-5 making it 11 wins in 12 games

LETHBRIDGE – The Lethbridge Hurricanes wrapped up a five game week on a winning note at the Enmax by defeating the Kelowna Rockets 6-5. That made it a Canes win in each of the five games and left the team sitting at 11-0-1-0 in their past 12 games

Once again the opponents outshot the Canes – this time it was 43-35. However, once again, that didn’t stop the Hurricanes.

While the Canes have made a habit of being first on the scoreboard of late, it was Kelowna that struck first on Sunday night, on a shot from Conner Bruggen-Cate at the 1:35 mark.

The Canes were quick to retaliate with a trio of goals in rapid succession. The first came off a shot by Brennan Menell at 2:28. Calen Addison found the back of the net three minutes later and Jordy Bellerive added a power play goal at 6:46, to put the Canes up 3-1. At that point, Kelowna switched out their goalie. Calvin Thurkauf added a goal for the Rockets two minutes before the end of the first, putting the Canes ahead 3-2.

The first half of the second frame belonged to the Rockets with goals from James Hilsendager and Calvin Thurkauf, who took advantage of a power play to add his second of the game, putting the Rockets in front 4-3. However, the Canes’ Colton Kroeker tied the game at 13:41 on a pass from Tyler Wong.

The third period opened on a 4-4 tie and it wasn’t until the half way point that that the Canes’ Tanner Nagel broke the tie on a breakaway, assisted by Zane Franklin and Brennan Riddle. About five minutes later Egor Babenko planted the Canes’ sixth goal on a power play.

With just over three minutes left in the frame, Nolan Foote planted one for the Rockets and the visitors pulled their goalie in the last minute. However, it wasn’t enough and gave the Canes their 6-5 win.

The game’s Three Stars were 3 – Egor Babenko, 2 – Calvin Thurkauf and 1 – Tyler Wong. The game also saw Canes’ goalie Stuart Skinner make save number 3,517, to become the all-time saves leader for the team.

The Hurricanes, who are now sitting in second place in the Central Division, take a break for a couple days before hosting Kamloops on Wednesday night and then travelling to Edmonton on Friday. The team then breaks for Christmas before a home-and-home match with Kootenay on December 27th and 28th.
