Attempted gun smuggling by Americans continuing issue at border crossings

LETHBRIDGE –   In spite of the popularity of television Border Security programs travellers continually fail to learn from the mistakes of others. That is particularly true of American citizens attempting to enter Canada with unreported or concealed weapons, and those nabbed for infractions are not travelling light.

Almost every month, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) releases a litany of infractions from the Coutts crossing and the month of November was no exception. One case involved multiple weapons

On November 17, border guards examined a vehicle in which they allegedly found a loaded and prohibited .25-calibre handgun. A Great Falls, Montana, man will be in Lethbridge court on January 18 to face four counts of smuggling.

Then, on November 29, border officers examined a pick-up truck and flatbed trailer which produced four undeclared handguns, including two prohibited units. A 46-yer old man from Alaska facing six charges, including smuggling.  He is also scheduled to appear in Lethbridge court on January 18.

If it isn’t weapons, its drugs and alcohol.  A ‘word to the wise’ — if you are returning to Canada and believe it is a safe bet to hide alcohol in a pop bottle, think again.  A Saskatchewan man found out the hard way and was turned over to the RCMP for being impaired.

The Coutts Border crossing is the busiest in Alberta, processing more than 95,000 travellers every month, including close to 37,000 cars and 11,000 commercial trucks.
