Penguins’ Marc-Andre Fleury briefly leaves game after taking skate to chin

TORONTO — Pittsburgh goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury was forced to briefly leave the game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Penguins in the opening minutes after taking a skate blade under the chin on Saturday night.

Tangling with Steve Oleksy in front, James van Riemsdyk’s left skate veered up and caught Fleury under the mask.

He signalled to the bench and was eventually treated by one of the team’s trainers before exiting to the dressing room.

Fleury didn’t appear to be in much distress, but looked to require additional attention. The Sorel-Tracy, Que., native needed five stitches for the cut on his neck, located around the Adam’s apple.

Matt Murray took his place in relief.

The 32-year-old returned to the bench just past the midway point of the period, spoke briefly to Murray and head coach Mike Sullivan during a stoppage in play and then took his place back in the crease.
