Bear spray incident results in charges

LETHBRIDGE –   A 31-year-old man has been charged after bear spray was discharged at a Christmas party on the weekend.

Just after 3:00 Sunday (Dec 18) afternoon,  about 50 people – many of them young children – were attending a church group Christmas party at Galaxy Bowling along the 1700 block of 23 Street North.

 A man entered the business and began yelling and swearing at a group of children. A 49-year-old man, who was a church group leader, asked the suspect to leave and staff called police. However, the suspect began yelling threats then reached into his bag and produced a can of bear spray. The church group leader was able to get the subject outside and away from the children but was sprayed in the face. No one else was injured.

Police arrested the subject outside the business and seized the can of bear spray. 

Nathan James Wolf Child, is charged with assault with a weapon, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to the public, unauthorized possession of a prohibited/restricted weapon, possession of a prohibited firearm.   He was remanded in custody for an initial court appearance on Monday
