Hurricanes defeat Ice 4-1

Dec 28, 2016 | 9:48 PM

LETHBRIDGE –  The Hurricanes were anxious for revenge when they hosted the Kootenay Ice Wednesday night, after posting a 6-4 loss to the same team the night before in Cranbrook.

The game got off to a rough start with the Canes providing the Ice with a power play opportunity three seconds in, courtesy of a high sticking penalty against Jadon Joseph. However, Brett Davis provided redemption by putting the Canes on the scoreboard at the 4:36 mark, assisted by Ryan Vandervlis and Shaun Dosanjh.  Kootenay’s Matt Alfaro evened the score just over a minute later on a breakaway.

The first period ended with the teams tied 1-1 and 12 shots-on-goal each.

Second period action peaked at the half-way point as the Canes’ Zane Franklin and Kootenay’s Barrett Sheen were each tagged with a five minute major for fighting. The Canes’ Jordy Bellerive lobbed in his 14th goal of the season and the game winner on a power-play at 12:01. Four minutes later, Brett Davis added the insurance goal, assisted by Brennan Menell and Giorgio Estephan.

The third frame got underway with the Canes up 3-1 but, the scoring continued with Tanner Nagel finding the back of the net with the final goal at 5:37.

The Canes outshot the Ice 37-30 and more than 4000 fans were on hand for the 4-1 win. The Hurricanes (19-13-3-2) finish out 2016 with a game against the Tigers in Medicine Hat on Friday night.
