TABER – A Saskatchewan man remains in hospital with serious head injuries after a suspected assault in Taber Wednesday (Dec. 28) night.

The Taber Police Service responded to an alleged serious assault in the backyard of a home along the 5000 block of 53 Street. In an update to local media on Friday (Dec. 30), further investigation confirmed that two victims may have been assaulted by the same suspect.

The first victim, a 26-year old female who had recently moved to Taber from Saskatchewan, was supposedly hit with a garden shovel, choked and had her life threatened, but did not require any medical assistance.

A 25-year old male, from Saskatchewan as well, tried to intervene in the first attack, and was struck in the head with a spade. Police say the accused may have hit him more than once as he lay unconscious on the ground.

The man was transported to the Taber Hospital, and later airlifted by STARS to Calgary’s Foothills Hospital. He remains in the intensive care unit at this time, and has already spoken with investigators.

Police say Maurice Joseph Lavallee, 39, from Timber Lake, Saskatchewan, has been remanded in custody on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault against the male victim, assault with a weapon and uttering threats against the 26-year old woman. They believe the suspect and victims know each other, and that the attack was not random.

Lavallee is set to appear in Taber Provincial Court on January 17, 2017.
