Farm fuel listed among Carbon Levy exemptions

Jan 2, 2017 | 5:39 PM

LETHBRIDGE –   The NDP government’s Climate leadership act, and the Carbon Levy that goes with it, officially took effect on Sunday (Jan 1st) meaning consumers must now pay a carbon tax on fuel.

Eligible farmers are exempt from the carbon levy on marked or dyed diesel or gasoline used in their farming operations.  However, propane, aviation fuel, and heating fuel are not exempt from the carbon levy.

The farm fuel carbon levy exemption uses the same eligibility criteria as the Alberta farm fuel benefit (AFFB) or the AFFB fuel tax exemption. A farms’ AFFB registration number will be the same one used for the carbon levy exemption, so farmers will only require one registration number for both exemptions.

For those farm operations that need a registration number, a new application former will be available January 3rd, and older applications will no longer be accepted

More information can be obtained on the Alberta Agriculture website   or downloadable documents can be found on the same site.
