Man accused of killing Winnipeg girl wants review of police actions

WINNIPEG — A man accused of killing a Winnipeg girl whose body was found in the Red River is waiting to see whether he will get a review of his treatment by police.

Raymond Cormier is charged with second-degree murder in the 2014 death of Tina Fontaine, a 15-year-old who was in the care of Child and Family Services.

While waiting for his trial, Cormier filed a complaint with Manitoba’s Law Enforcement Review Agency that alleged Winnipeg police acted inappropriately.

Cormier told the CBC that police fabricated evidence to use against him.

The review agency, which normally investigates allegations of excessive force or discrimination, decided last year that Cormier’s accusations were outside its mandate and best left to the trial.

Cormier is appealing that decision in court and appeared briefly Wednesdy as the matter was put over to Feb. 22.

He remains in custody and did not speak in court as his lawyer set the next date.
