Some teachers unhappy with third tentative deal with Nova Scotia government
HALIFAX — A former candidate for the leadership of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union says he’s opposing a tentative deal because it sends the wrong message about what the contract dispute was originally about — including better funding and supports for special needs students.
Paul Wozney, communications director for a Halifax local of the 9,300-member union, said he fears the deal’s key provision giving teachers two more days off doesn’t clearly communicate that the fight was to boost funding in classrooms to improve education for students and teachers.
“If teachers agree to this deal, all the trolls that called us greedy tax pigs will appear to be right,” he said. “That’s terrifying because for the first time in my career I feel there’s a critical mass of rank and file Nova Scotians who are informed.”
A ratification vote will be held February 8.
