Taber, EPCOR end operating agreement for water systems

Feb 1, 2017 | 11:19 AM

TABER – After nine years, the Town of Taber has ended an agreement with EPCOR to operate its water utilities.

Effective Feb. 1, the town has taken over the operations and maintenance of the water, wastewater, and storm water utilities in the community. EPCOR had been responsible for those systems since 2008.

“There was a mutually beneficial business case for both parties to enter [into] conversations to end that agreement,” chief administrative officer Cory Armfelt said. The town thanked EPCOR for not only maintaining a high level of service during their agreement, but investing in major projects like the wastewater treatment plant and the north storm pump station.

Armfelt explained residents shouldn’t notice any changes.

“The whole process, with the negotiation and the changeover of employees, has gone excellent,” he said. “I think both sides of the table would agree that the conversations were carried out very professionally and the results have been excellent, and we are very happy to welcome those employees to the Town of Taber.”

There are no payouts or penalties involved in ending the agreement, and no rate increases are planned for 2017.
