Environment Canada issues winter storm warning for southwestern Alberta

Feb 4, 2017 | 10:11 AM

LETHBRIDGE – Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for much of Southwestern Alberta, and warns that hazardous or potentially crippling winter conditions are expected over the next 2 days.

The weather service says a moist flow of Pacific air aloft, and a dome of cold air over the region, will combine to produce an extended period of heavy snowfall over parts of southwestern Alberta. Snow will likely be heaviest on Sunday and the first half of Monday.

By the time the snow tapers off Monday afternoon, areas in and near the foothills of southwestern Alberta may see in excess of 50 cm of snow. Some indications are that up to a metre of snow may fall in some areas.

Environment Canada says this is a storm that will likely make travel difficult or impossible for a few days.

Travel is not recommended. Road closures are likely. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.
