UPDATE: Highway 3 reopens after freezing rain closes road

UPDATE 9:40 a.m.: Highway 3 has reopened, but winter driving conditions exist.

UPDATE 8:20 a.m.: A portion of Highway 3 has reopened, on the B.C. side. According to DriveBC, the stretch between Sparwood and Fernie is open.

ALBERTA – Weather is once again affecting travel through the Rockies.

As of Friday morning (Feb. 10) Highway 3 remained closed from Coleman, on the Alberta side, all the way to the junction of B.C. Highway 3 at Elko. Drivers were being asked to follow the instructions of emergency crews.

According to Drive BC, freezing rain was reported Thursday night. The website said to expect an update at 8 a.m. Friday. In addition, Alberta Emergency Alert said heavy snow accumulation on rooftops was melting, creating the risk of snow sloughing and structural damage.

A wind warning remained in effect for southwestern Alberta as of Friday morning.
