WHL tries to contain mumps outbreak

Feb 25, 2017 | 7:35 AM

CALGARY – The WHL has sent out a statement regarding the mumps outbreak that began with the virus detected in a Brandon Wheat Kings player early this month, then spread to the Medicine Hat Tigers.
The illness has since spread to other teams, affecting a number of players.
Spokesperson Corey St. Laurent says WHL Officials have been working with its team services committee and all 22 teams to try and minimize the spread of the virus.
Medical and training staff are on the lookout for anyone with symptoms, including officials, and are isloating those infected as required.
Protocol also includes sanitizing all locker rooms and equipment, and reviewing the vaccination histories of players and team staff.
Vaccinations are being strongly recommended for those who have not been immunized.
And while St. Laurent says the risk of infection is small, the WHL has also told clubs to refrain from any direct contact with fans at this point.
According to Alberta Health Services:
Mumps is spread by contact with infected respiratory droplets or contact with items that might be contaminated with the saliva of an infected person. Measures that reduce the risk of transmission include:

1. Good hand hygiene – wash hands often with soap and water, or use alcohol hand rub.

2. Avoid sharing items that could be contaminated with saliva such as water bottles, drinking glasses, utensils, etc.

3. Clean and disinfect high touch/potentially contaminated surfaces.
