Registration for Residential No-Cost Energy Savings Program begins

Feb 28, 2017 | 3:04 PM

LETHBRIDGE – Beginning today (Feb. 28), homeowners can register for the province’s new “Residential No- Cost Energy Savings Program.” It’s part of a $45 million energy efficiency initiative being rolled out this year.

Environment Minister Shannon Phillips says the goal of the program is to have homeowners replace old thermostats and lightbulbs, add nightlights, power-saving AV bars, faucet aerators and low-flow showerheads if they choose to.

Those who are interested will have to visit http://efficiencyalberta.ca and fill out a registration form. Once that is completed, they will be contacted by a third-party company called Ecofitt, to determine the requirements for the home.

According to Phillips, there is no specific limit, for example, on the number of lightbulbs installed. If a home needs 5 or 15, they will get them.

The catch is, you can’t do it yourself.

“The installation will be done for you,” says Phillips.”An installer will come and probably provide you with some other insight over things that you could do potentially or give you more information about other programs as they move along such as the residential appliance rebates and so on.”

At this point, it’s not clear which companies Ecofitt will either contract out to do the actual installation work, or whether they will have their own representatives do it.

She says the initiative is a long time coming and maintains that the carbon tax introduced January 1st of this year, will pay for the cost of the program.

“This has been done in other jurisdictions. That’s one of the things that’s really quite good about energy efficiency. And the fact that we are the last place in Canada or the United States without an energy efficiency program.”

Tenants can also apply for the program, however, they have to submit information and get the landlord’s or property manager’s approval to visit.

Actual installations aren’t expected to begin until sometime in April.
