Man charged in Pincher Creek standoff back in custody

Mar 6, 2017 | 10:17 AM

PINCHER CREEK –   Freedom from custody has been short lived for the man responsible for a standoff with RCMP in Pincher Creek early in February.

Around 10:00 Friday (Mar 3) night, RCMP stopped a vehicle driven by 53-year old Dewey Todd Starzyk  in Pincher Creek. He was arrested for breaching his curfew condition, and a search of his vehicle found a small amount of what is believed to be cocaine as well as drug paraphernalia.

Starzyk has been charged with one count of breaching his recognizance and one count of possession of a scheduled substance.  He’ll be in court on Tuesday (7) for the charges.

On February 8th, RCMP were called  to a Pincher Creek home around 5:00-am to investigate a report of shots fired. That led to the neighbourhood and nearby Matthew Halton High School being cordoned off for more than eight hours before the situation was resolved.

The RCMP’s Emergency Response Team, which included a negotiator, an armoured vehicle and a helicopter were all brought in, and they were able to take the suspect into custody around 1:00-pm.
