Lethbridge College one step closer to claiming a national banner

EDMONTON – The Lethbridge College Kodiaks women’s basketball team defeated the Douglas College Royals of British Columbia, 99-44 during the kickoff of the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Championships at NAIT today (Mar. 16).

Taking control early on in the game, the Kodiaks fought for jump ball and were able to take the first crucial points of the game.

After maintaining that early lead and winning by over fifty, they’ve now started looking at the games ahead.

“We’re going to refocus, we’re going to do our homework on the teams we’re playing, and hope we come away with nothing but a w,” said Ali Cameron, the assistant coach for the Kodiaks.

The Kodiaks will be taking on Nomades de Montmorency in the semi-final game taking place tomorrow night (Mar. 17) at 6 pm in the NAIT gymnasium.

The Nomades de Montmorency of Laval, Quebec, battled against the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics of Halifax, Nova Scotia in the second game taking place Thursday.

Following a close first quarter, Montmorency was up 17-14 and took the win ultimately by 17 points, 75 to 58.

Key players from Montmorency that the Kodiaks will have to watch out for are Frederique Beauchamp, who dominated the boards with 18 points and Mael Gilles who trailed behind with 15.

With the Kodiaks advancing to the semi-finals, Todd Caughlin, the Athletic Director for Lethbridge College, got excited.

“It’s always great to get through the opening game with a W!” he exclaimed.

Caughlin also believes the first games are often difficult since players can have first game jitters.

“That is sometimes the toughest to prepare for, but I’m very excited to move into the semi-final,” said Caughlin.

The last time the Kodiaks took a gold home from nationals was back in 2004, when they were still a community college. The most recent medal however, was a silver in 2015.
