EDMONTON — The provincial government is expanding its school nutrition program to all school boards in the province.

The announcement on Wednesday morning in Edmonton, noted $10 million in Budget 2017 will go to all school boards to create nutrition programs at schools starting in September 2017.

“We know students can’t focus in class if they have an empty stomach,” said Premier Rachel Notley in a news release. “Giving students access to a daily nutritious meal not only ensures they have the fuel they need to get through the school day, it also helps develop the skills that ensure lifelong healthy nutrition. That’s how we are working to make life better for Alberta families.”

““It’s been incredible to witness the unique and innovative approaches that school boards have taken to implement the program and the resulting impact it is having in the classroom,” said Education Minister David Eggen. “I’m excited for this next phase as we continue to meet the basic needs of our students, while charting the path towards a nutrition program model that is sustainable for schools.”

The program began last fall, with $3.5 million in funding going to 14 school divisions.

In 2017/18, the 14 school boards that participated in the initial project will receive $250,000 in grant funding, while the remaining 46 school boards will receive $141,000.

School boards are required to demonstrate how their program adheres to the Alberta Nutrition Guidelines for Children and Youth and are required to include a nutrition education component.

According to Alberta Education, more than 5,000 students in 33 schools have been receiving a nutritious snack or meal per day since the program started.
